I think your police analogy is good, and I agree with what you said about responsibility.

Nowhere in the article did I say embracing your monster means using it as an excuse to hide behind the rules or blame the victim. If anything, it’s the exact opposite. The monster is not a justification, but a reminder, that right and wrong is volatile and as human beings we are prone to do both.

Embracing your monster (or your shadow, id, demon, whatever you wanna call it) means acknowledging there’s a degree of danger that comes with strength (or any other sort of competence, for that matter — intellect, wealth, etc.), and ultimately taking responsibility for that danger.
